Types of ADHD Medications
ADHD medications can ease symptoms by enhancing the way neurons transmit messages. Certain medications boost neurotransmitters, while others slow down reuptake.
Stimulants
Amphétamines or methylphenidates are the most frequently used stimulants for ADHD. They can be effective within 20 minutes and last about four hours. They are available in liquid, pill or patch forms.

The most commonly prescribed medication prescribed by healthcare professionals to treat ADHD is stimulants. They function by increasing the levels of certain chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain. These neurotransmitters assist people to focus, think and control their emotions. The use of medication can be paired with these other treatments to maximize the benefits for people suffering from ADHD.

The FDA recommends that health professionals closely monitor patients who are taking ADHD medication. This is to ensure the proper dosage is administered, and that the medication is having a positive effect on the patient's symptoms. Regular appointments with a doctor are required to look out for negative reactions or other health issues. During these visits, a doctor will ask about any other medications the patient is taking, which includes prescription and non-prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications, supplements, and herbal remedies.
